Ford starts shipping Tesla Supercharger adapters… selling for $200?

Ford is rolling out their Tesla Supercharger adapters and they’re going for around $200. Anybody planning to pick one up?

I’m a GM owner, so this is kinda funny. I managed to get the Tesla-made adapter without much hassle, but the Lectron version seems to be always on backorder. Just talking about the official GM adapters here.

@Weston
If you’re a GM owner, you can only get the Tesla NACS adapter through their EV app, not at any stores or dealerships. You have to go through the app, and it’s shipped straight from Tesla. That’s why GM’s Supercharger access was delayed.

@Dallas
Actually, GM offers both Tesla and Lectron adapters. Generally, if you own a Bolt, you get a Lectron adapter, and if you’ve got an Ultium, you get the Tesla one. Some Bolt owners are getting clever and using Ultium VINs from dealer websites to grab the Tesla version through the app.

@Dale
Wait, does that mean they don’t fully trust Lectron adapters for high-power use? That’s… interesting.

Or maybe folks are thinking long-term and want the best one if they plan to use it with their next EV too.

Technically, the adapters are rated for 1000V and 500A, so they should work with any EV. But most Tesla Superchargers run at 400V, so that’s what you’d use most often.

@Dallas
GM’s official part number for the Tesla adapter is 85090442. There was another part, 85090450, which looked like a Lectron rebrand, but that one’s been removed from their system. Now, those who ordered the Lectron part seem to be receiving the Tesla adapter instead. It’s just one more weird part of the whole story.

@Tao
GM was all in on Lectron until Tesla stepped in and blocked access to the Supercharger network. All of this is just backroom dealings coming to light.

But they were selling the adapter even after Supercharger access was granted, right?

@Toby
Yep, that’s true.

Do you have any proof to back that up?

@Reign
Not directly, but it’s widely known that Tesla pressured GM to sell a certain number of Tesla adapters. This wasn’t just a GM issue; Ford went through the same thing.

That’s not true.

@Tao
According to GM insiders, it is.

@Dallas
Honestly, finding the charger link in the GM app was a nightmare.

Anyone know why GM and Ford both seem to prefer Lectron over A2Z?

Probably because Lectron’s distribution is based in the US while A2Z is more Canada-focused. Even though both are manufactured in China.

Personally, I’m leaning towards A2Z over Lectron.

@Nori
I ended up buying A2Z’s NACS to CCS adapter combo for less than what Tesla charges through Polestar or Volvo. No regrets there.
