Does anyone else's car alert them about stop signs and red lights? Is this a common feature in the US

I recently had my 2025 iX serviced and was given a 2024 i5 as a loaner car. I noticed that the i5 alerts me both visually and audibly when I approach a stop sign or red light too quickly. My own iX doesn’t do this. Is there a specific setting in the iDrive system that I’m missing, or does the iX model lack this feature altogether? It’s puzzling why the i5 would have it but not the iX, especially when both models seem to have similar technology.

I’m following this thread as my iX doesn’t provide these alerts either. The only traffic-related notifications I get are related to the speed limit.

This feature is actually part of a traffic light subscription service in the US.

It’s hard to tell if you’re joking or not with this.

I’m currently in a free trial month for the traffic subscription in Canada. The most it does is alert me to red light cameras occasionally—I’ve never received alerts for stop signs or red lights.

When driving in the UK, the system occasionally warns me of a red light and always for a Stop sign. In Germany, not only does it warn of red lights when using Driving Assistance Professional, but it also stops the car at red and resumes on green. Even without using the assistance, it alerts me to proceed on green if I’m not paying attention.

That’s incredible. Are you sure you weren’t in a Tesla? I wonder if this feature is disabled in the USA.

I wasn’t in a Tesla, but a 2024 M60. The features seem to vary by region. For instance, crossing into the Netherlands from the UK, the system notes that automatic speed limit adoption is unavailable, but once you enter Germany, it’s available again. Then, entering Austria activates speed camera alerts, but these are lost again in Italy.

@Paris
The EU should standardize these tech regulations to avoid the lowest common denominator effect. I wouldn’t want to lose the full capabilities of my German DAP.

My car does this too. It even reduces acceleration as I approach a stop sign.

I’ve driven my iX across Central Europe, and this feature worked only in Germany for me.

Wait, what is the function that allows camera images to be displayed on your dashboard?

It’s available in iDrive 8.5 as ‘Augmented Reality.’

Is that similar to the night vision feature in Audis, or just an augmented reality view for navigation?

@Harley
It’s a permanent feature that shows navigation arrows superimposed on the video feed. If you move the AR video to the center screen, it only activates for navigation turns.

I can confirm that my UK 2023 iX warns me on both the dashboard and HUD if I’m approaching a red light, stop sign, or a signposted junction too quickly.

My iX used to have that AR view but then it stopped, and now it’s just a blank screen there. The AR now appears on the main screen, not the driver’s screen. How can I get it back to how it was?

You can select the content and layout of the screens. Press the steering wheel button above the phone icon to get started and scroll through the options.

My wife’s 2024 X7 has this feature, but my 2024 iX does not. BMW’s approach to software updates is baffling.

This feature only works if the map data is accurate. ‘60% of the time, it works every time.’
