Has anyone else noticed their charging speed dropping to around 7kW after 80%? I used to get speeds between 60-100kW even after hitting 80%, but now it seems to slow down at almost every fast charger in my area. Is this normal or something new?
For eGMP cars like yours, it’s actually normal for the speed to drop that low briefly at 80%—likely something to do with battery chemistry or monitoring. Bjorn has mentioned it before. After that, it should pick back up to a regular descending curve.
We really need a FAQ pinned thread for common stuff like this and wireless Android Auto/CarPlay!
I’m not 100% sure, but it seems like it’s part of the charging logic. Around 80%, the charger drops to single digits for about 1% of the state of charge. Sometimes it happens at 80%, other times at 83% or even 78%. My guess is that it slows down to let the battery cooling catch up depending on the temperature.
I’ve never charged past 80% on a DC fast charger, but I’ve heard that it drops speed significantly for a bit and then returns to the normal charging curve after that.

I always thought you weren’t supposed to charge past 80% on a fast charger because it’s not great for the battery. Maybe it’s a feature to protect it.
You’re not going to break the battery by charging past 80%. It just takes longer, and people waiting to charge might get impatient. The car is designed to handle 0-100% on DCFC, so the engineers accounted for it.

I charged last week, and right at 80%, my speed dropped to 4kW. Before that, I used to see around 60-80kW at 80%, and then it would slow down to 40kW at 90%.

Yeah, I’ve seen the speeds fluctuate based on battery temperature or load balancing at the station. Sometimes I get 70-100kW, and other times it drops below 10kW.

I had the same experience last weekend. But at the next EA charger, 150 miles away, I couldn’t charge at all because one of the CCS posts broke. It left me stranded in Eastern Oregon, but Hyundai Roadside Assistance towed me 130 miles to the nearest dealer, and they fixed it under warranty. I only had to cover the rental car cost, thankfully!

Yeah, issues like that don’t get talked about enough.

Totally agree. It was a rough situation with the busted insulator.

I heard EA is testing throttling speeds past 80% in the LA area. I hope that doesn’t stick because on long trips, sometimes you really need to charge past 80%. On my recent road trip through Nevada and Utah, I was still getting the higher speeds after 80%.

It’s not throttling—they just stop charging at 85% at some stations.

I saw mine drop to 7kW for a few minutes after 80%, then it went back up to around 50-100kW. Not sure why, but I don’t use fast chargers often.

My Tesla did the same thing. Some EA fast chargers only slow down to around 30kW, though.
