Why is my car charging so slowly? Any suggestions?

I’m trying to charge my car, but it’s charging really slowly. I tried to find something on the display to help with the battery preconditioning, but there’s nothing. I drove to a 350kw charger, but my car is only getting 54kw. Does anyone have any ideas on why this is happening?

The Niro has a maximum charging rate of 77kw or 84kw depending on the model year. Under ideal conditions, that’s all it can handle.

Welcome to the Niro.

You’ll probably see that 54kw a lot. If you’re lucky, you might hit the 84kw cap, but I’ve never seen it. The closest I got was 71kw for 20 seconds. Usually, you’ll be charging for about an hour to hit 80%. From 80% to 100% will take about another hour.

The key is to use the 100kw chargers, since you’ll just slow everything down on the 350kw chargers if your car can’t handle that speed.

Damn. Thanks.

@Milan
Not sure if the utility mode killed the 12V battery. I’ve been using it for an hour every week, and my battery is still fine at 89% after 4 years.

Rented a Kona for a couple of months, and it seemed like it had much faster charging.

My 2018 Kona EV charged faster than my 2023 Niro EV. The Kona started fast (up to 75kw) and then slowed down. The Niro seems to have a less predictable charging speed.

@Shawn
“20 glorious seconds”

If that’s not a flex, I don’t know what is.

@Shawn
The 100kw chargers cost more for just a slight increase in charging speed.

At EVgo, it doesn’t cost more. Pro tip: check the prices in the app and look for super off-peak hours to save 50%. The 100kw and 350kw chargers are the same price, but the difference is how much they can deliver at once. If the 350kw spots are taken by cars with lower charging capacity, everyone ends up charging slower.

Why would someone get this car if they don’t have a charger at home or work?

Good question!

EVs aren’t as simple as gas cars. You hear “fast charging” and think it means 15 minutes, but no one really explains the reality of it. When we bought the Niro, we were mainly motivated by a great deal, the EV tax credit, and the convenience of local charging stations. The Niro worked for us, even though we didn’t expect the slow charging times.

I have a charger at home, but I do Uber/Lyft and had to charge about 80 miles from home.

The dealer lied to me about the charging times, saying it would take 20-30 minutes from nearly empty to 80%. They also didn’t mention utility mode for idling, which drained my 12v battery. The dealership didn’t know anything, and I’m regretting my purchase. I’ll probably go back to a hybrid and never buy from that dealer again.

No, I meant I was idling for hours at a time for work. The dashboard light showed it was charging, but it wasn’t. Turns out, you need to turn on utility mode for long idling.

@Milan
Can you just charge from a regular wall outlet? You should be able to get about 1kw and 30-50 miles a day that way.

I have the level 1 charger, but charging overnight only gives me a few percent.

@Milan
It took 36 hours for our level 1 charger to get from 20% to 80%. We were told we could charge anywhere, but they didn’t mention how long it would actually take.

Yeah, it’s crazy. I thought I could charge it like a regular car, but I was wrong.
