Hey guys, I’ve been curious about something lately and I thought you might have some insight. Why do you think hub motors aren’t very common in electric vehicles? Is there some sort of mechanical disadvantage to using them?

Using hub motors would add a considerable amount of weight to the unsprung mass of the vehicle, which would ultimately result in a much rougher ride quality.

Sure, when it comes to high-power electric motors, they’re okay to construct as lightweight, but they tend to lack torque.

Not just the smoothness of the ride, but also the durability. Picture having a motor that vibrates along with every bump in the road, and think about the damage that could cause to the mechanical components.
