We all know that making an EV affordable means reducing battery size and complexity. For a truck, this requires something lightweight, without the complexity and features of a modern pickup. Think of it as the Model Y of trucks. Tesla could have done this, but they went in the opposite direction. Traditional automakers seem focused on making big, expensive trucks to avoid competing with their own models and to keep margins high. The affordable electric truck market is fiercely competitive, with established car manufacturers and new players competing for a share.
Ford is planning to launch a smaller, affordable electric pickup and SUV. Sources say the first model will debut in 2026, starting at around $25,000. It will compete with Tesla’s low-cost EV and use LFP batteries, which are about 30% cheaper than traditional lithium-ion batteries.
