Superchargers now showing in app with Niro and Nacs adapter added... anyone else seen this?

We have a Bolt with an A2z adapter and have been charging for the last month or so at the nearby supercharger. Today, I added my Niro as an available car, and until now, it only showed destination chargers. Now, it shows available superchargers with my Niro selected. Has anyone else tried charging in the last day or so? Maybe access has been enabled. I’ll give it a try this weekend and update everyone.

Please report back! I have a '23 Niro EV Wind and I’m about to buy an NACS adapter just to get more universal access, but if supercharger access is now possible, that would be great. By the way, is this happening through the Tesla app or another supercharger app?

@Taylor
This is happening through the Tesla app. I’d recommend using it, as it’s much easier. We don’t use the Chevy app on our Bolt because it’s terrible, and the same goes for the Kia app.

Cool, I’ve been trying to figure out how to use that app. I’m still a bit new to the EV world, especially with Tesla/NACS chargers. Thanks for the info!

Yes, I have a 2022 Niro and live in the Seattle area. As of tonight, the superchargers around me are showing up when I select my car with the adapter! I will test it out this weekend.

Please let me know. I tried this Thursday with my '23 Niro and it didn’t work.

@Aki
Looks like this was just enabled yesterday afternoon. I’ll keep you updated on how it goes when I try it out.

I tried today at a Supercharger nearby, but sadly it didn’t work. I tried two stalls—one gave an ‘unauthorized vehicle’ error, and the other said my car wasn’t allowed. Odd since the supercharger appeared in the app as available for my 2022 Niro.

I tried early Friday morning but couldn’t charge. At that time, no chargers were showing on the Tesla app.

Tried again early Saturday morning… still couldn’t charge.

I think we’re really close to getting official access to superchargers now based on a few things:

  • Tesla changed the app so that superchargers are visible when we configure the car as a Niro EV (like this post).

  • EV6 and EV9 owners who will get a free NACS to CCS adapter have started receiving their notifications.

  • The Kia update site says the long-awaited software update should be out by ‘late January’.

  • Some Niros have been able to use superchargers for a while, even though Tesla closed the access recently.

I just got my A2z adapter for my 2022 KIA Niro EV in anticipation of using Tesla superchargers. There are a couple nearby in Portsmouth, RI. I checked the Tesla app, and they are now listed. Thanks for the heads-up. I hope to try it out tomorrow .

@Nick
Check out the other replies; it looks like Tesla still hasn’t allowed Kia vehicles. I tried yesterday and it still didn’t work, even though the chargers show in the Tesla app.

Strangely, only some superchargers show up in the Tesla map for me with my Kia. The closest ones aren’t showing up. Does Tesla reserve some chargers for their own vehicles?

We will only have access to version 3 and 4 superchargers. We won’t be able to use version 2 (or older version 1) chargers. Version 2 and 3 chargers look similar, and even Tesla owners confuse them sometimes. The main difference is that version 2 chargers have a silver band on the base of the handle. If you see that band, it’s a version 2 charger, and you won’t be able to use it. Since older chargers don’t have payment controls, you will only be able to activate them through the Tesla app or possibly the Kia app or in-car software (if they add it).

In short, if you can’t see it in the app, you won’t be able to use it.

@Thane
Great summary—thanks for the clarification .

Yes, the chargers are showing up on the map, but we still can’t charge. Hopefully, we’re getting close to full access.

Yep, confirmed. I charged our Bolt this morning without a problem, then switched to the Niro using the same stall and A2z adapter. The error I received said, ‘Unknown error occurred. Your vehicle cannot charge at superchargers at this time.’ The Kia app showed ‘charging complete.’ It seems pretty clear that Tesla is whitelisting by manufacturer VIN. Like with the Bolt, I don’t think a software upgrade is needed. Just use the Tesla app to pay directly. Most likely, the software update will be to implement Kia’s navigation and payment systems.
