I bought a 2023 VW ID.4 in Illinois earlier this month. The dealer had the plates on the car when I arrived, and I didn’t know until later that it was a regular IL plate number—that is, one without an “EL” designation. Is this a problem? Or does possessing an EL plate provide any benefits?

Illinois made mid-year regulatory changes (again). EVs can now have standard, vanity, or other plates; EL plates are no longer mandatory.
Whichever plate you choose, you will still have to pay the increased registration fee.
EL plates used to be $35 for a 24-month reg; now, there is no benefit. An EV now costs $255~ per year.

Hello there, in Arizona, an EV plate is required by law to enjoy 24/7 access to the HOV lane (solo driving).

Hey, The “EL” license plate often indicates an electric vehicle or a specific local regulation. Check with your local DMV or licensing authority to confirm if you should have received one.
