I have a question about my model (Wind AWD, no tech package). It does some cool things like opening the trunk and unfolding the mirrors when I approach with the key. But it doesn’t unlock the doors. Why is that? What’s the idea behind it? Can I change this setting?
That’s normal for this trim. Only the GT Line and higher models have this feature.

Strangely, I noticed that it can automatically open the trunk when I’m standing behind the car with the key fob. It seems odd that it can do that but won’t unlock the doors.
@Jet
Yeah, I have a similar feature on my 21 Sorento X Line. It’s great when it works, but sometimes it doesn’t open when I need it to.

What does ‘up’ mean from GT Line? I’m curious.

I think it’s just the GT model. The GT Line is like Hyundai’s Limited trim on their EVs. It has LED ambient lighting, better seats, and more driver assistance, but the powertrain is the same as the Wind and Light models. Check Kias website for more details.

But why does it beep and unfold the mirrors then? What’s the point of that?

It’s to remind you about the upgrade package you didn’t choose.
@Jules
Totally makes sense!

It seems silly. I don’t get it either. It feels like a half-baked feature. I’d love to know the reasoning behind it.

It does this because the software is the same as the GT Line. The reason the handles don’t pop out and the doors don’t unlock is because of upselling strategies.

Maybe it’s the car’s way of saying hello?
@Dex
Like it’s saying ‘Hello! But please don’t get in’

Exactly! My renter has a Nissan Ariya that auto locks and unlocks, but not my much nicer Kia.

My 2015 Audi had the same issue. They could fix it with a software update; they don’t need a new mechanism.
@Jet
They really should! I think it should be an option to have to be inside the car with it ON to set it. Now it feels like security is all on me.
@Jet
Software updates are available by subscription only now!

Huh. Mine just unfolds the mirrors and doesn’t beep.

If you’ve ever come back to your car and found that someone bumped your side mirror, you’ll be glad that they can auto fold and unfold. I’ve had that happen more than once, thankfully not on my EV6.
@Desmond
I totally understand why they fold in. I just don’t get the idea of folding them out automatically when I’m next to the car.
