Here is the situation: I recently discovered that my apartment complex has Tesla chargers installed in the parking area. Although I don’t currently own a car, I’ve been thinking about getting an electric vehicle (EV) as my first car. Having these chargers available at my apartment makes the prospect of owning an EV more appealing.
I contacted the apartment manager to get more information, but they didn’t have many details. They mentioned:
- The parking fee is $275 per month, regardless of whether you have an ICE or an EV.
- The chargers are linked to Seattle City Light, so they aren’t sure about the specific rates.
- These chargers can be used by any EV, not just Teslas, as there are other non-Tesla EV owners in the building.
From what I gathered, it seems I’d be paying the same $275 parking fee as any other car owner, and if I get an EV, I’d only need to cover the cost of charging based on Seattle City Light’s rates. Is that correct?
I’m not very familiar with these chargers, so I have a few questions:
- Will the electricity rate for charging be the same as what I pay for my apartment’s electricity usage through Seattle City Light?
- Are these wall chargers considered the slowest type available?
- How long would it typically take to charge an EV like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 or Kia EV6 from 10% to 80%?
- Since I don’t drive much, just on weekends and for leisure, I’m okay with a longer charging time. Would using these chargers be cost-effective compared to owning an ICE car?
Your advice would be greatly appreciated as I decide whether to go for an EV or an ICE car. Thanks!
