How Long Do You Plan to Keep Your Ioniq 5 … Share Your Thoughts

About 10 years :blush: bought it used October this year when it was three years old and had 35,000

I figure at least 10 years, unless I get a really good offer for a trade in on a newer Ioniq 5 model year

My default plan is to drive a car as long as I can. The car I got rid of when I bought the Ioniq was 14 years old. My other car is 10 years old right now. I’m trying to get another five years out of it if I can (and because we prefer driving the car that we don’t pay for gas on, I’m barely putting miles on it).

But realistically, I imagine at the 10 year mark, I’ll probably consider my options.

I feel like the state of EVs are going to evolve so quickly, that I’ll probably want to upgrade a little earlier than necessary. And I’ll likely be in a comfortable situation that it won’t be an unreasonable expense. But the car seems so versatile, that even with changing technologies, it feels like it’s going to be a really useful car for a long time.

If we do replace our second car in five years, the Ioniq makes a great secondary car. Even a reduced battery isn’t an issue if I’m using the other car for longer trips.

@Hartley
I agree, I think that even with the Ioniq 5’s current tech, it is going to last a long time.

I think the Ioniq 5 would make an excellent secondary vehicle if you decide to replace it within 5 years. I find that it is still a great vehicle even if you do just in town driving or the occasional road trip.

Until the fair market value makes sense, or it gets wrecked, I have no plans to move on while I have a powertrain warranty. Right now the market value is disastrous, I’m probably underwater on the loan. Sellers are SOL

OTOH I would not hesitate to scoop up a used one if I stayed on the sidelines. The prices are really good for buyers especially those who are under the income level to get the 2nd hand credit. Unfortunately none of that applies to me so fuck it, will continue to drive and enjoy it until something changes or the warranty runs out. Love this car

I drive it till it dies or I become rich.

Until the wheels battery falls off

I expect to drive at least 500k km with it. So in our case 25 years

Nice! I have no doubt that an Ioniq 5 can last 25 years, the tech has just improved so much.

In my mind I’m thinking 15+ years and 300,000km. Similar to you but with a slightly shorter timeframe.

I kept mine about 15 months and took quite the haircut

As a single car owner, I have a 3 year lease. If in the true summer of 2027 the tech is notably better (400-450 mile range, charge from 10 to 80 in under 10 minutes on 350KW EA chargers, 4 m/kw efficiency on highways, etc) I’ll likely get a new one. If it’s marginally better then it’s the consideration of keeping it and buying out my lease if it makes sense.

Just switch it out to the latest version… that’s what I am thinking when my lease end happens

I have an 8 year old daughter. I kinda plan on it being her car when she turns 16. Other than it feels like way too much power for a learner.

Put that thing in eco mode

My general goal for any car is 7 - 10 years, though if it’s still running great and there’s nothing new I’m specifically looking for I’d keep it longer. I love this car, but I also expect some pretty big changes over the next 5 to 10 years that will likely make upgrading then the way to go. My last car I kept for just under 9 years and was ready to upgrade to get all the safety advances with this purchase.

I upgraded the warranty to 8 years, 150k. Hoping it lasts long beyond that!

I think it will, the Ioniq 5’s current tech is so much better than early EV’s.

I plan to keep it until the wheels fall off or it’s so expensive to fix junking it is cheaper. I bought a 22 used for 25k so depreciation can’t get much worse. I have multiple other cars so it should last 10+ years given how much mileage it will get is limited.

@Hart
While depreciation sucks for any new car, there have been good used deals on Ioniq 5’s.

25k for a used 2022 isn’t bad, I can’t see the I5 having another large depreciation hit as of right now.

Even if it isn’t your main car, I think it is going to do well for you long term.
