How Long Do You Plan to Keep Your Ioniq 5 … Share Your Thoughts

I’ve typically switched cars quite often, but the Ioniq 5 has made me reconsider. I’m seriously thinking about keeping it for over a decade. How about you all? Are you thinking of holding onto your I5 for the long haul or do you lease and switch to newer models frequently?

My general goal with every car is to drive it until it doesn’t drive anymore, and that’s what I’m going with here. I figure with this I should be theoretically set for the remainder of this weird changeover period where manufacturers are still figuring out how and when to electrify their fleet.

By the time this car is ready to give up the ghost I’m hoping that all this discussion about plug types and which chargers are the right speeds will be done and settled and these cars can go back to being things we use to go places instead of being tech demos for a Brave New World.

@Sky
100% agree with you. I plan on driving mine until it can’t move anymore.

I am with you on the plug type changeover and which types of chargers to use. Hopefully it all just becomes ubiquitous and people can just use chargers and buy any EV without having to worry too much.

@Sky
I don’t get it. You can keep replacing parts so in theory it drives forever until the chassis breaks.

Do you mean to say that you will drive until the motor(s) give up?

My understanding is that the battery - the most expensive component - will degrade over time. So realistically you’re looking at 2-2.3% loss per year, and a lifespan in the 300,000km range.

I’d say we’ll see EVs getting recycled - battery recycling is getting into gear at the moment and the chassis etc can be taken apart and melted down.

Until it gives me enough trouble that it’s easier and cheaper to sell than to keep fixing it.

I just leased mine for two years

What is your plan after 2 years? I’m in the same boat. Worried there won’t be good lease deals then

Hopefully EV tech will have advanced by then, better batteries, faster charging, a standardized charging port, more charging stations, and I can somehow lease or buy one of the newer cars. If not I guess I’ll look at used EVs as there should be a lot getting returned around that time.

Until the Rivian R3x is available

This is the answer I want to say. But I did a two year lease with my Ioniq, and I think only the R2 will be out by then, so I think My plan is to do an R2 lease, then go to the Scout Terra for myself (lease or buy depends on battery tech). But get my partner the R3X.

We just bought ours and are planning on keeping it a long time. We just retired our old car after 14 years and 350,000km, and it wasn’t an EV. So at least 10 years hopefully! The only motivation I can foresee to change it would be significant advancements in battery storage (range) and charging speeds.

@Avery
I agree, I plan on keeping mine for a minimum of 10 years.

A significant leap in battery tech in terms of range and charging speeds would certainly be motivating, given the pace of tech advancement in EV’s. I’m sure we will see the second or third generation Ioniq 5 with killer specs.

I leased it for three years, I will return it at the end of the lease.

I am pretty sure the tech will be improved and cars with better range (specifically for winter weather) will be out there by that time.

Also, the charging infrastructure is now growing. At the end of this lease I will look at the expansion and maintenances to decide if I want to go for another EV or not.

@Wendell
This is how I feel. The EV market went absolutely nuts the past 5 years. The next 3 could be a big change again depending on this next administration.

Leased it 4 years so that when new tech is there won’t lose value. Maybe I’m wrong but hey, worst case I’ll just get another one! :wink:

Current plan is to keep it until it’s inconvenient. Given the battery tech is all warrantied for 10 years I would like to keep it at least that long, but we will see! I assume 7 or 8 years for sure though.

Have a two year lease. I’d like to buy it at the end, but I’m pretty sure the residual value will be much higher than its actual value.

I’d buy another used/certified one, though.

In the exact same boat. Will begin my search for almost the exact same car as mine a week before turning it in, unless I can get another lease deal as good as I did this time around.

Until driving it is no longer feasible, or when I can convince the wife to let me buy a used Taycan
