Has anyone tried charging their Kia with a Tesla adapter?

I heard Tesla chargers should work if we use an adapter, and they’ve been available for a couple of days now. For those of us with a 2022 Kia, we’ll need to buy the adapter since it’s not included. I’ve also read there’s a required software update.

Has anyone actually charged their Kia using an adapter? Is it possible without the software update? Can we pay for charging without the update? I’m guessing apps like ABRP will help find chargers. Please share your experience.

I got the A2Z Typhoon Pro adapter for my 2022 Niro EV, and I’ve seen reports that Kia owners can now charge at Tesla Superchargers.

No software update is needed—just select a Hyundai EV like the Kona in the Tesla app to locate nearby chargers. Plug in with the adapter, open the Tesla app to pay, and it should work fine.

I’ve seen other Niro and EV6 owners report success. I’ll give it a try at a local Supercharger tomorrow.

Let us know how it goes.

Will do. I’ll update after I try it.

@Rowen
I tried it today with my 2022 model and the A2Z Typhoon adapter. Sadly, it didn’t work. The Niro said ‘charging complete’ as soon as I plugged in but never started charging. Looks like there’s a communication issue.

@Blair
That’s disappointing. I’ve seen reports from 2023 models and first-gen Kona EVs that it worked. Maybe it depends on the car’s VIN or even the charger itself. I’ll give it a shot tomorrow in Seattle.

@Rowen
Sorry to hear the Gen 1 models are having trouble. I just tested again on a different Supercharger, and it worked fine (MY23). Looks like they haven’t blocked us yet. Maybe this explains some of the delay.

@Rowen
I’ll try another charger tomorrow and see if it works.

@Tony
That’s a 4-stall Supercharger? Smallest one I’ve seen. There’ve been lots of reports of Gen 1 Niros having issues.

@Rowen
My 2022 didn’t work either. Seems like first-gen Niro EVs might need something else for it to function.

That’s unfortunate… After hearing from two other 2022 owners, I’m unsure if it’s worth trying tomorrow. Might still give it a go.

@Rowen
I heard it works with the EV9 too.

Here’s a success story someone shared about charging a 2023 Niro: https://thisforum.com/r/KiaNiroEV/comments/1i2jvns/successfully_charged_my23_niro_on_tesla/

Tried today but couldn’t get the charger to start. My Kia app immediately said ‘charging stopped’.

Was this a compatible Supercharger shown as usable with non-Tesla vehicles? Some V3 Superchargers are still exclusive to Tesla cars.

@Sam
There’ve been other reports of Gen 1 Niros having problems. Sometimes the adapters are a tight fit and need extra effort to connect properly.

@Sam
Yes, I had a supported vehicle added, and the Supercharger location was listed as a NACS Partner Site. I used the A2Z Typhoon Pro adapter. Worked fine on a CCS fast charger an hour later.

Thinking about getting a Niro EV in New Zealand. I saw on the Tesla Supercharger page that there are two cables, one being CCS. Is this something unique outside the US?

Yes, New Zealand uses CCS2 as the standard for all DC fast chargers, so every charger has the same plug. It’s different from…
