Did Xiaomi EV Just Set a Record as the Fastest 4-Door Car at Nürburgring

Looks like there’s some serious competition in the electric car scene

They certainly want to play with the big boys. 20 seconds faster than Taycan, 40 faster than Model S. Not bad for a company that shipped their first car 7 months ago.

The Xiaomi SU7 Ultra completed a lap time of 6:46.847 under wet ground conditions on the first attempt. At 4:12 in the video, the car completely lost power for 12 seconds due to an unknown malfunction, and the driver, visibly frustrated, kept aggressively stomping the pedal. It could be much more faster, this is insane!

@Alix
The official engineer responded that the sensor was blocked by leaves.

and 20% wet route.

Apparently the road legal SKU is also being tested.

It’s a all carbon fiber prototype. Probably cost several million USD to make

Model S Plaid with the track pack was 7:25.231.

I’m guessing they used race tires, but nonetheless a stunning time from Xiaomi, 6:46.874 is insane.

@Mal
All carbon prototype. Basically this is a Xiaomi SU7 as much as the NASCAR Camry is to a regular Camry

Exciting! First it’s drag race records, and now EVs are breaking lap records. Glad to see the progress EVs are making. Wish we could have these Chinese EVs in the US

Pardon my ignorance on the matter, but do automakers usually provide a video of the completed lap?

Would love to see it in action, but couldn’t find a video in the link.

@Devin
Cheers :clinking_glasses:

Electrification can make super cars even more impressive than they already are. Only thing missing from it is the noise. But anyone who’s driven a Rimac or Formula E car knows electric supercars have their own noise. This doesn’t surprise me at all, only thing it needs to do is have a battery that can maintain going at Nürburgring speeds for multiple runs on that track.

@Harper
Yes, that’s right. Modern EVs inevitably lose power and slow down after about 30 to 35 kilometers due to the heat generated by the battery and motor. (Check out JEVRA’s races if you get a chance.) This includes both the Plaid and the Taycan. I’m really curious about how much heat resistance will improve with solid-state batteries, but it seems that battery and motor cooling technology will remain a challenge for EVs in the future. That said, the Nürburgring’s 20-kilometer length is just enough for a time attack.

@Ellis
Automakers do multiple runs on that track. Right now it’s really the only advantage ICEs have as they can sustain going 150-200+ mph on tracks for multiple runs as the only thing they have to do is swap tires and fill up (which is a really quick process). An EV as seen in Formula E, they have to swap cars which I think is horribly inefficient as charging the batteries quick enough isn’t a reality. That and they lack swappable batteries. My questions are; how many laps did the SU7 have to do? how many days did it take? and did they have to use multiple SU7s to do it?

I think Rimac has that tech but man does it come at a very hefty price of $2 million. I’ll definitely check out those races though .

I am going to sell my GTR Takumi Edition when this car comes to the U.S.
