Charging at 10kw in 7 degrees... is this normal?

At this point it’s not even worth charging.

That’s L2 speeds… did you precondition?

Do you have the optional heat pump? If so, you set the DC charger as the destination in the satnav, and it will warm up the battery so it charges faster when you get there. Not super fast at those low temps, but definitely faster.

@Eli
Search the settings for pre-conditioning and make sure it’s enabled. Then set a DCFC station as the destination and wait a while. You’ll see a battery heating icon appear under your battery gauge. It could take 30-60 minutes of heating to get the temperature up.

@Yan
I don’t have pre-conditioning

@Miko
Is the heat pump required to condition the battery? I can never get above about 55KW when charging on a fast charger. Pretty bummed.

I don’t think the heat pump is required. What’s your usual state of charge when you plug in? I’ve gotten 80+ kW a few times but I was less than 5%, and the batteries were warmed up.

@Yan
Usually around 20% or so on long trips. I need to figure out a way to charge faster. I tried over the weekend but wasn’t sure if I did it right. Clicked the box on battery conditioning and then set the Navi to a fast charger. It charged at like 45kw, I think. It was about 25% when we started.

@Bay
That tracks and is why my next electric car can charge faster because it’s ridiculous waiting almost an hour to go from like 20% to 80.

Not required, and only relevant in the cold.

Does it really make a difference? Did you test it? I always charge at home so I can’t test it myself.

Yes, it makes a difference.

@Miko
More than that. Did you try at the same temp with or without and saw how many kWh it charged?

Yes. I have an OBD2 dongle that shows me battery temp and a host of other features. I tried it both ways and the preconditioning heats the battery on the way to the charger and makes it charge faster by about 7-10 kWh in my experience.

If you do not have the battery heater option (some years omit this if you do not have the winter weather package), this is a problem you’ll have. :frowning:

Only the Niro Wave has the heat pump unfortunately :frowning:

Untrue. Any Niro with a winter package will have the heat pump. Winds or waves.
