Can I still use my Tesla home charger with the EV6?

I’m thinking about switching from my Tesla to the EV6, but I still have my Tesla home wall charger. Does anyone know if I can still use it, or is there an adapter for this?

You should be fine with a Tesla to J1772 adapter. There are some good options out there, though I don’t have one myself. The A2Z adapter seems to be reliable. No need to replace your charger, but if possible, it might help to adjust the amperage output to avoid stressing the system. If you don’t need 48A, setting it lower could be gentler on all the equipment.

@Torin
I’m not so sure about adjusting the amperage, but the rest sounds good. At 48A, you’re nowhere near 1C.

What’s 1C?

Here’s a link explaining C-rate: BU-402: What Is C-rate? - Battery University

@Hadi
Thanks for the link. I still agree with your point. Even though we’re far from 1C, there are other things to keep in mind. If you don’t need to charge quickly, reducing the amperage could extend the life of all the charging equipment, especially the ICCU, which can develop issues over time. The EV6 did have problems with heat buildup during 48A charging, especially in hotter areas. Even after an update, it still overheats, so turning it down might be a good idea for longevity.

Imagine a light bulb running at 100 watts, but with a dimmer set to 75 watts. It would last a lot longer. This is just my opinion, of course. But hey, my opinion and $3 can get you a cup of coffee.

Upvoted for ditching Tesla for good reasons. I was waiting years to get an EV because even back then, I thought Elon was a joke. As soon as the EV6 came out for the US, I knew it was the car for me.

Yeah, I thought he was a jerk too, but I figured all wealthy CEOs are like that. But wow, being an anti-Semitic fascist is a whole new level of messed up.

I used my Tesla wall charger without any issues, just needed an adapter. Cost me $50.

Kia will be releasing an OEM Tesla adapter soon. You might want to wait a couple of months for that. Here’s a link: The EV6 Will Lead Kia's Transition to Tesla Superchargers | The Truth About Cars

@Lior
It’s not so simple to create an adapter that works for both AC and DC from NACS to CCS. Home chargers are AC, while Superchargers are DC. It might be worth waiting for the official release, but without the UL standard for NACS converters, it’s hard to know what the quality will be like.

@Ellis
Oh, I didn’t realise Tesla uses different plugs for AC and DC. We’ll have to see what comes out. Honestly, I don’t really pay to charge unless I’m road-tripping, which is rare. I’ve got a free Level 2 charger from the government, and my garage setup is good enough to handle it.

@Lior
The plugs are the same, but CCS has separate pins for AC and DC, which makes the plugs huge. NACS uses pins for both, but not at the same time.

Wow, didn’t know that. Thanks for the info. :+1:

I switched to the EV6 GT for the same reasons. It feels like an upgrade from my Model Y. The adapter arrived the next morning, and I was able to use my existing charger. Plus, they have promotions where they send chargers for free.

Don’t buy anything from Tesla. Elon Musk is planning ‘2 years of pain’ that regular people will have to endure, but not the rich ones. It’s time to make Elon feel some pain too.

I’d rather see him suffer a lot. :man_facepalming:

I bought my adapter from this company: Order EV Charging Adapters | 1-4 Day Shipping - Lectron — Lectron EV. I haven’t used it yet, but I was impressed when they contacted me about a recall and sent me a replacement unit. It was expensive, but I don’t mind paying for quality.

@Morgan
Thanks for the info.
