Back from a 1700 km trip to Italy with four mountain bikes on the back

We’ve had the car for two years, and this was our first longer trip. Overall, it was quite enjoyable! It was the first time we used the charging planning feature and had the best charging experience in Switzerland. The coffee in Italy was amazing, and I had the best Leberkäsewecken in southern Germany. However, there were two crowded supercharger stations on the way back.

Looks great!!! Glad you enjoyed it! If the rear end bottoms out from having four bikes on there, I found the AirLift 1000 bags work great inside the stock suspension coils.

“Inside the suspension coils?” That sounds complicated. Since it’s a leased car, I don’t think I should modify the suspension? The car was packed up to the roof. In general, the four bikes plus the carrier weigh around 80 kg, so I hope it won’t bother the suspension too much. Thanks for the hint!

@Noel
Good call! Definitely not something for a lease. I just assumed you had an aftermarket hitch for four bikes. That would allow for more permanent alterations.

How was your efficiency with the car loaded and with the bikes on the back?

It was a little more than 20 kWh, which I think isn’t too bad. The temperature was between 10-20°C. We drove on the German Autobahn (though we didn’t really take advantage of the unlimited speed too much), crossed the Alps, and faced a bad thunderstorm in Italy upon arrival. Plus, we had winter tires mounted the week before…

I just got mine and can’t wait to do the same! Which under-mount did you use?

Maybe this: Detachable trailer coupling, IONIQ 5, 751,00 € …not sure though.

And don’t forget to press the P button :grin:. We traveled with our mountain bikes during the last four summer holidays, and sometimes charging can be tricky with the long tail.

So true! Sometimes I wished I had the charging plug in the front.

Did you go to Finale Ligure?

What wheels are those?

Not sure. I think they might be these: Hyundai IONIQ 5 Winter complete wheel, HMD04EV Black 7,5x19 ET49,5 + , 479,00 €

Love the wheels!

I like the rims.

Drawbacks: two crowded superchargers on the way back.

I’m not a big “free market” guy, but it’s crazy how difficult it is to get more stations near me. They sometimes go offline for months. It’s selling electricity for a premium, which seems like a great business model. Is it a zoning issue? Is it the cost of digging up the ground for cables and transformers?

@Johnston
All the copper in those thick cables… Yeah, it’s crazy how expensive charging at those stations can be. The energy cost us as much as the diesel would have for that distance.
