My girlfriend and I love camping and travelling with our EV6. We’d really like to bring our bikes along, and the easiest way seems to be getting a hitch installed on my 2022 EV6 RWD. But every dealer I’ve called in Southern California either never responds or calls back but doesn’t help.
Is getting a hitch installed a common thing at the dealer? We’re also thinking about using one of those hitch-mounted cargo carriers for extra camping gear. I’ve tried going in person to two dealers, but I can’t seem to get an appointment.
I’m not comfortable installing it myself since it looks like you might need to cut the bumper. Any advice?
If you’re not comfortable installing it yourself, I’d recommend going to a U-Haul or a similar place instead of the dealer.
I did a quick search for a Southern California zip code, and it looks like U-Haul charges about $450 for a hitch and installation. This is for the hitch only—no wiring or anything extra. You don’t need wiring if you’re just using it for a bike rack or a cargo platform.
@Dustin
Thanks, I’ll check out U-Haul and the link you shared. I always thought the dealer would be the easiest option, but I guess not. Have you ever had to cut any panels when installing a hitch? I’m worried about messing that up.
@Darwin
Cutting isn’t too bad. I’ve done it a few times to save money. I haven’t done one on an EV6 yet, but there are probably install videos on etrailer. If you’re worried, you could have a shop handle the cutting part.
@Darwin
I installed one myself and had to cut a small 2x2-inch piece of the bottom plastic. If you have an oscillating saw, it’s pretty easy. The harder part is trusting your jack or car ramp enough to crawl underneath the car.
@Dustin
Definitely agree—U-Haul does good work. I got a standard hitch, but if I could do it over, I’d get a stealth hitch instead. They look a lot better.
I went with the 2-inch version and did the install myself in about two hours. I had to cut a small 4x6-inch hole in the plastic skirt underneath the car. It’s not the bumper—just a flimsy plastic divider held up by plastic rivets. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. You’ll need basic tools and a bit of patience.
I used a dremel with a cutting bit to make the cuts.

Thanks for sharing. Maybe I’ll try doing it myself. The stealth feature sounds really nice. I don’t want a hitch mount sticking out when I’m not using it.

That’s exactly why I went with the stealth hitch. It’s hidden when you’re not using it. Makes the car look cleaner.

I have a stealth hitch too. It worked well for the first year but is now stuck in the receiver. I can’t switch it back to stealth mode.
Try spraying some white lithium grease on the coupling. I do it once a month. If it’s still stuck, give it a few taps with a rubber mallet.
