Volkswagen has just released the ID.3 with LFP battery in China. What do you guys think?
I wish they’d offer an ID.3 with LFP batteries here in the US.

Same here. It’s the electric car I’ve always wanted.

I’m from freezing cold Canada, and I don’t think LFP batteries would do well here. But I still want the ID.3 available in the market.

It’s so frustrating how few smaller electric car options we have.

I heard something about LFP batteries lasting longer. Could be a good idea for the ID.3.

Yeah, LFP batteries are known for having more charging cycles, making them more durable in the long run.
Volkswagen needs to get their prices down. The ID.3 costs $15K in China and $27K in Germany before taxes.

Producing cars in China is a lot cheaper than in Germany. And honestly, you can find the base ID.3 for under 30K in Germany, which isn’t too bad considering.

But it’s still double what people in China pay. Doesn’t feel like a great deal to me.

True, but labor and production costs in Germany are way higher than in China.

Why would VW lower prices when they can just keep making more money from us?

Well, that strategy backfired—sales have dropped by 40% since before the pandemic.

Looks like VW thinks it’s worth it. Otherwise, they’d have brought prices down by now.
The competition in China is so intense that there’s barely any profit to be made. I don’t see that happening anywhere else for now.
Isn’t this a smart move? From what I understand, VW has been struggling to keep up in the tough EV market.
This is the same car VW was hoping to avoid tariffs on by building in China and selling in Europe. They even wanted to cut 18,000 jobs in Europe for it. Thankfully, that didn’t work out. Now, with tariffs, a $15K car turns into a $22.5K car, and with VAT and transport, it’s almost the same price as if it were built in Europe.

Pretty sure Germany’s real concern was about Chinese retaliation on luxury car exports. Germany depends heavily on the Chinese market for its flagship models.

Exactly. And let’s not forget that some Smart and Mini models are already made in China and shipped to Europe. Mercedes and BMW need that trade with China.

Volkswagen thinks this is what the market wants? Chinese buyers care more about the overall experience, and VW has no idea how to provide that. It’s like comparing an old flip phone to a smartphone.
