Kia recalling 80,255 Niro EVs and hybrids over airbag and seatbelt issues… what’s happening?

Kia has issued a recall for Niro EVs, plug-in hybrids, and hybrids produced between June 2022 and December 2024. They’ve identified potential problems with airbags and seatbelts due to how the floor wiring is routed. Anyone else affected?

This is for vehicles made between June 2022 and December 2024. Does anyone know if it’s more specific than that?

Is this only for the US or does it include other regions too?

@Briar
The affected vehicles are all-electric, plug-in hybrid, and hybrid versions of the Niro. They were all made in Kia’s Autoland factory in Hwaseong, South Korea.

Got it. I was just wondering because UK models are right-hand drive. It looks like they come from the same plant though.

@Briar
Not sure about other regions, but it’s definitely tied to their Korean facility.

Is there a way to check this in my settings? I got my car in August 2022. Am I safe or should I still double-check?

@Yan
You should see it in the Kia Access app.

Does it show the manufacturing date, or just if your car is affected?

I haven’t checked for the manufacturing date yet. I’ve got a 2023 Niro EV Wind that I bought in June 2023, but I don’t know the exact manufacturing date offhand.

I remember someone bringing this up before. It’s mainly for 2023–2025 Niro PHVs because they don’t have electric seat adjustments on the driver’s side. A lot of news sites are mixing this up with the EV-only models, but I’ve been trying to find the actual NHTSA recall info to confirm.

@Isle
Here’s what the recall states:

> The NHTSA found that “variances in how the floor wiring assembly is routed, combined with frequent adjustments of the front passenger seat,” could lead to issues. This includes “malfunctioning airbags and seatbelts that might increase the risk of injury during accidents.”

> The affected vehicles include Niro EV, plug-in hybrid, and hybrid models built between June 2022 and December 2024 in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi.

It doesn’t specifically say it’s tied to manual adjustments, just seat movement in general.

@Keenan
Hmm, so this might be a new issue? It makes sense, though, since the passenger seat is manual on those models. I checked my VIN, and my 2022 model isn’t on the recall list. Anyone with an all-electric Niro seeing their VIN included? These news sites really need to provide the recall number or better references…

@Isle
> better references

Agreed… 100%.

@Isle
How do you check your VIN to see if your car is part of the recall?

Your VIN is on the sticker inside the driver’s door or on your windshield. You can enter it on the NHTSA website to check if your car is included.

@Isle
Mine is on the list. Thanks to someone on this forum for sharing the link. I have a 2023 Niro EV, and it says I’ll get a notice in March about repairs.

The recall sounds serious. Should we avoid driving the car until it’s fixed? What do you think?
