Is the Taycan battery really degrading over time?

Hey folks, I’m curious about Taycan owners… have you noticed your battery degrading over the years? I’ve seen Teslas with lots of miles still performing well. But what’s the story with Taycans? I’m considering a used one but heard that replacing the battery pack could cost around 60k, which is a shocker for me. I want to make sure it can last the next 10 years without issues, especially since I plan to drive only about 3-4000 miles a year.

My Taycan is 4 years old and has 29k miles. I still get over 240 miles per charge. You should be fine with it.

29k miles isn’t very high mileage, you know.

True, but it’s close to what you said you’d drive in 10 years…

I think there’s a video from Engineering Explained discussing battery life. It’s more about age than mileage. A battery might degrade less in two years with 100k miles than one that’s four years old with only 1 mile. I’d recommend checking with people who have a 2020 model. From what I’ve seen, degradation is similar to Tesla, dropping to around 85-90% and then stabilizing.

There’s an 8-year warranty on the battery. They replace it if the state of health drops below 75%. A German car magazine did a test with a 4-year-old car at 100,000 km and reported more than 90% state of health (94%, I think).

@Brady
Thanks for the info!

The 4S claims 208 miles with a full charge. With 20k miles on my car, I used to get over 270 miles in summer, but now I’m down to exactly 240. I’m not too worried about battery degradation. Just so you know, if it says 50% battery on arrival, you’ll actually get there with around 50% left. My Tesla would lose like 20-25 miles per drive.

I haven’t noticed anything beyond the expected degradation. Winter range isn’t great (about 300 km), but that’s what happens living in cold Norway. Any thoughts?

How’s your range in summer? I got a Taycan GTS last autumn, and the range has been disappointing. I’m thinking of selling it, but maybe I’ll wait until summer to see how it does.

@Ashwin
In summer, I’ve seen 400-450 km, which is okay. It takes about 10 minutes to add 250 km on long drives.

No 800V chargers here, it’s such a hassle to charge. Waiting 30-50 minutes for a 10% to 80% charge with 130 kW chargers is a pain.

I live on a small Mediterranean island where it never gets below +10. It’s hard to drive more than 100 km a day. As long as the battery stays above 70%, I should be okay. But I really want to know if anyone has driven over 100,000 km and still has a good experience.

How cold does it get where you are? Greetings from Canada.

@Mal
Thanks, that’s useful!

I had mine for 4 years and over 100k miles here in Canada. Honestly, it’s tough to say if the battery degraded since software updates often improved my range instead of reducing it. Just make sure to check the warranty and you should be fine.

I believe Porsche reserves some battery capacity, so if certain cells degrade, they can swap them out without you noticing much change. Also, the battery has a warranty covering a certain percentage of degradation based on mileage. You should look into what it is for your area.

@Bryn
What’s the warranty like for the Taycan?

I’m not sure if it varies by region, but in the UK, it’s usually 8 years or up to 100,000 miles for the battery.

Porsche has found that their batteries hold up really well even with high mileage and frequent fast charging. If you want a reference, check out the Out of Spec launch video for the Macan EV.
