Got My Car Battery to Precondition for the First Time … Has Anyone Else Had Trouble with This?

After many attempts, I finally managed to get my car’s battery to precondition by setting a navigation destination that I couldn’t reach with the current charge, which forced the system to add a stop at a charger along my route. I’ve never been able to get it to precondition just by navigating to a charger.

They should just give us a simple button for this, instead of making us jump through hoops.

Rivian just announced they’re adding this feature, so hopefully, it becomes a standard option across the industry soon.

There’s a button for this in the '25 models of ccnc and the '24 i5 N.

They really need to offer something for those of us who supported the platform early on.

Wait a minute… Did you really manage to get the super rare diesel Ioniq5? Back in my day, my friend, that’s a glow plug light…

@Lin
That icon reuse is perfect, really fits the glowplug function.

I managed to get it working by setting a charger just 3 miles away as my destination. The precondition symbol showed up a few minutes after I set it. Note that your battery needs to be above 20%. Not sure if it kicks in if the battery is already warm. I keep an eye on the battery temps using an OBD2 dongle.

@Reese
It won’t turn on if the battery is already warm. During summer, I use the built-in navigation to route to charging stations, and it didn’t start preconditioning until the temperature dropped below 55-60°F.

@Kingsley
I noticed that too. I was experimenting with preconditioning tonight, and it stopped right when I got to the charger. I guess that’s okay, but if there had been a line, the battery might have cooled off while waiting.

@Reese
Yes, but it doesn’t cool off that quickly. Over a holiday weekend, we had to wait an hour for a charger, but even then, the battery stayed warm enough to charge from 25% to 88% in just 22 minutes at a max rate of 200kW.

Why can’t they just have a simple button to turn on pre-conditioning? It could run for just 10 minutes or so and give clear reminders on the screens.

They definitely could implement that.

If they did, people would overuse it, degrade their battery life, and then complain about that. The system is probably designed to be smarter than most drivers in this regard.

@Vesper
The system is very inefficient when preconditioning, so you might be right about why they haven’t implemented a manual button. I’d still prefer to have the option with a clear warning about the potential impact.

@Jules
I wonder how other car manufacturers handle this feature.

@Jules
Why do you think the car is inefficient during preconditioning? It takes time to warm up the battery due to its mass.

That’s my guess. I noticed my efficiency was around 1.5mi/kWh while driving at 45mph, which is pretty low.

This video from a well-known Ioniq expert is a great resource for understanding battery preconditioning.

I recently navigated to a charger expecting a 10% battery level on arrival, and the car started preconditioning. I achieved a charging speed of 240kW.
