Ford Mustang Mach-E vs. Hyundai Ioniq 5: Which One Should I Choose?

Hello guys…I’m currently in the market for an electric SUV, and I’ve narrowed my choices down to two models: the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Hyundai Ioniq 5. I’ve done a bit of research on both, but I’m still undecided. I was hoping to get some insights from people who own or have driven either (or both) of these cars.

I have a family member who has the lowest trim and range Mach E. I have an I5 Limited and a Model 3 in my Garage. I can tell you that Mach E is nice for being basic trim. Smooth Ride, has a great sound system, a trip planner built in, and of course Wireless A/A.

The Mach E I drove does not have a blue cruise, but the lane centering and cruise control made it as good as my autopilot and as good as the HDA on the Ioniq 5. It was LOCKED in that lane when I went for a road trip.

I have tested both vehicles, although I have never owned one  .
Although they were not my cars, I have some disadvantages for both cars and here they are:

Ioniq 5:

  • Does not lock when moving away from the vehicle. The Mach-E can.
  • Both vehicle entertainment is bad but at least Mach-E has YouTube that can be used when charging. Ioniq 5 has nothing.
  • Ioniq 5 has a larger sound when using turn signals. Some might say big deal but it can get a little annoying at times. Mach-E alarm sounds are more toned down and I like that.
  • Mach-E when using EA requires no app. It plugs connects and charges. Ioniq 5 does not work that way.

Mach-E:

  • The range is bad. Compared to Ioniq 5 it is really bad. Ioniq 5 limited use 20’ wheels and this one has 19. Mach-E has bigger batteries and yet less range. Ioniq 5 is superior in range.
  • Charging speed is OKish but compared to I5 it’s almost 40% slower.
  • Car information on Mach-E is not as good as I5.
  • Mach-E highway drive assist will expire in 3 years. Hyundai doesn’t have that kind of limitation. Most Mach-E features like Alexa and Blue Oval pass are subscriptions so after 2 or 3 years they will pay to work.

Well if you have Mach-E then I don’t need to go into details. The I5 is a better car in many ways. But my love for the Mach-E cannot die.

When comparing the I5 SEL to the Premium SR Mach E, the I5 is a better family car for longer trips. It is much more comfortable and less buggy on trips.

The charging was great, it was more efficient and had a longer range than the SR ME, and with the heat pump, it is much better in the cold. We ended up selling the ME after a few months in favor of a Tesla M3, and the wife has the I5. The I5 SEL was missing a few features that we wished we had gone with the Limited.

The I5 seems special to me, and the Mach E attempted to be a Tesla but was unsuccessful. In my opinion as an engineer as well, the I5 has superior engineering.

However, I would have been content with the Mach E alone. It’s a quality vehicle.

From the comments, I can see that the Mach-E is smaller than the Ioniq 5.

But of course as an offroad lover, I would always go for a larger car

Before the topic is closed, let me comment that the Ioniq 5 insurance is cheaper than Mach E. Ioniq 5 has a higher safety rating compared to Mach E.

I have never known this. I wonder why that would be? Is it because the I5 has a lower MSRP? Maybe yes.
