I wanted to share an update about Volvo’s access to Tesla’s Supercharger network and see what others think
I’m going on a road trip for Thanksgiving and would love to have Supercharger access for that. I doubt I’d receive the official adapter by then. Is it a horrible idea to buy the Lectron instead?
Edit: I called my dealer. They said they’re keeping a list and will call me when the shipment comes in. Interestingly, they said they can only order 15 at a time.
@Hadi
Not at all. GM is actually shipping unlabeled Lectron adapters. If it’s good enough for GM to sell, it’s good enough for me to use.

@Hadi
I just spoke with our dealership. They are shipping on the 18th of November and expected to arrive early December.

Were you able to place an order?

He took my information and told me all the details, said I’m the first Volvo to call him and order it. No transaction tendered until the day it’s picked up cause they need to register the adapter to the car.
So unless something happens, I hope I’m early on the list?
@Kade
They need to register the adapter to the car? That seems weird. Unless it’ll support some sort of plug and charge functionality.

I didn’t ask, but now that I think about it, that’s probably what it’s for.
Also, he said it’s $230 plus tax, just for your information. Not sure about other dealers.

The adapters themselves are unpowered dumb adapters. They probably mean registering their records on who has requested and received an adapter through the official program. Or maybe registering your VIN with Tesla, but I’m pretty sure the actual charge authentication takes place between the charge port modem and the charging station modem.
@Hadi
But A2Z or borrow from a friend.
@Hadi
Used the A2Z for a while before receiving the official one from Rivian.
@Hadi
I have the A2Z. Works really well. Got it overnight.
@Hadi
I think you can buy them off Rivian’s website.

Yeah I just read that somewhere else. I wonder if that would get around the warranty issue if it’s manufactured by Tesla but not technically purchased from Volvo directly.
@Hadi
Seems like a better option than a third-party adapter in any case.

Both Lectron and A2Z claim their adapters are built to the upcoming UL 2252 standard. So they seem to be plenty safe. But Volvo says to only use a Volvo-approved adapter. It’s unclear how they’d interpret the Rivian-sourced one. It potentially seems like the worst of both worlds: a more expensive adapter that still voids your warranty.
@Hadi
Buy an A2Z adaptor instead of Lectron in my opinion.

Probably better off waiting for the official one, just in case.
Didn’t the official ones get recalled recently?

Yeah, a batch of the Tesla-manufactured adapters distributed by Ford was recalled.
@Cy
Which I believe was manufactured by Tesla. Which is presumably what the Volvo one would also be.
Edit: Yeah, Volvo’s press release photos pretty clearly show the Tesla version.
