Bought this car in February of 2022, and after addressing all the recalls, the ICCU failed and was replaced in November. Just now, I went to move the car into the garage, and it’s completely dead, despite being charged to 72%. I had to use the physical key to get in. It’s frustrating. It looks like it’s time to start shopping around because this issue keeps recurring. “We’re going to press on, and we’re going to have the happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tapdanced with Danny f*king Kay,” Clark W. Was your 12v battery ever replaced? That might be what you need to do.

Seems like the safest bet is to handle the recalls and replace the 12v battery preemptively, even if it seems fine.
@Mal
Agreed, my battery only lasted 22 months. A friend’s lasted three years before issues started.

Batteries can fail early in hot climates like Vegas. What’s your climate like?
@Ash
I’m in Southern California.
@Ash
Also in Vegas, my battery lasted 30 months. Is there data supporting that heat affects battery life?

Definitely. Heat impacts battery life significantly. You can find a lot of information on this online. For example: Can Heat Drain A Battery? Effects Of Hot Weather On Car Batteries And How To Protect Them [Updated On- 2024]
@Ash
Anecdotal evidence here, but all my car batteries in Vegas died within 30 months.

That’s interesting. My experience in Vegas since 2020 has been different, very unpredictable.

Heat definitely kills batteries. Had similar issues with my car parked next to a heat source.

Absolutely, heat and vibration are killers for batteries, especially traditional lead-acid types.
@Mal
Technicians should keep the 12V battery charged during software updates to prevent issues. It’s something you might want to remind them of.
@Mal
It’s wise to always have a backup battery for jump starting the 12V. This way, you’re less likely to be stranded.

How does jump starting work with EVs without a traditional starter motor?
@Kelley
A small charge is needed to engage the high voltage battery.
@Kelley
Not sure about the exact mechanics, but it was recommended by some folks from Rivian and confirmed by dealership mechanics.
@Kelley
Many car electronics are still 12-volt, and a battery pack should be enough to get the car running to reach a shop.

Any warning signs that the battery needs replacing, or do we just swap it every two years?

No warning signs from my end, all maintenance was up to date.
