I have a ChargePoint CPH50 home charger and I am looking to extend the cable length to make it more convenient for my setup. What is the best way to do this? Are there specific extension cables or adapters that are compatible and safe to use with this model? I want to make sure that the extension does not affect the charging efficiency or safety.
If I were you, I would be extra careful about attempting that. There must be a reason why most EV chargers tend to cap out at 23-ish feet, and I think it has to do with cable thickness and amperage.
Trying to run your charger over a longer cable than it is designed could easily cause a fire or even more damage to your charger.
I concur it is a frustrating problem, but as others have said I would pay to relocate the charger or have a second charger installed than to risk for the severe consequences.
If I may refer to the national electrical code and UL standards for chargers, they limit the length of the cord to 25 ft. And there are no provisions whatsoever for extensions. It is not exactly clear why, probably because that would encourage people to deploy them in ways where they would be subject to damage.
So that means that there’s no such thing as UL-listed extensions. So if you buy an extension, you can’t buy one that has third-party safety certification.
I will then advise you that it is better to avoid extensions completely, but if you must go with an extension, it is a good idea to look for a company that has a good reputation. Tesla Tap for instance is probably who I would buy from if I were you.
