Anyone else having slow charging on the 2024 Niro?

I leased my Niro back in May, and lately, the charging speed has dropped. It’s not going above 23kW even when I use a CCS charger. This happens even when the battery is under 80%. Does anyone know what might be causing this?

Fast charging generally starts above 7 kW. If it’s cold outside, the battery might not take a full charge until it warms up. It could also be an issue with the charger itself—maybe its cooling system isn’t working well, limiting output.

Can you share more details? Like the charge level when you plugged in, the charger’s max power rating, or the outside temperature? There are similar discussions in this forum that might help.

@Zimri
Fast charging usually refers to anything above 19.2 kW. For reference, home AC chargers can go up to 80A at 240V.

For the Niro, AC charging is typically limited to 7 or 11 kW, depending on the model. In North America, you can’t charge at a higher rate on AC.

@Zimri
I drive about 10 minutes to get to this charger. It’s the same one I’ve always used without issues until recently. The charger is rated up to 350kW, and I typically get around 70kW. The temperature has been about 37°F.

@Ameliascarlet
Your Niro tops out at about 70-80kW. To get the best speed, try using the car’s satnav to select the charger as your destination. Make sure battery preconditioning is enabled in the settings. This heats the battery before you start charging.

@Emerson
Agreed. At 37°F, preconditioning can help you get faster charging from the start.

@Ameliascarlet
How much of your recent driving has been at high speeds, like 70 mph or more? Lower temperatures can slow charging, and for the Niro, a 350kW charger won’t necessarily charge faster than a 100-150kW one. Aggressive driving can also affect charging speed.

@Val
Not much. It’s a short 10-minute drive to the charger. I go there because it’s nearby and part of Electrify America, where I have a 500kW credit from my lease.

My 2019 Niro maxes out at around 76kW briefly, but it usually averages 38-46kW between 20-80% charge. There are lots of factors affecting charging speed.

It’s probably because it’s 37°F outside. Does the Niro have battery preconditioning?

Yes, but only if you use the built-in navigation to direct you to a fast charger.

I’m not sure. I can’t find any settings for it.

It sounds like it’s charging, just not as fast as it should. Have you tried multiple charging stations, or is it always the same one? Check if battery preconditioning is an option for your car:

  1. Open the vehicle’s infotainment system.
  2. Go to EV > EV Settings > Battery Conditioning Mode.
  3. Enable the battery conditioning option.

I think it only works if you use the built-in navigation to head to the charger. This lets the car prepare the battery for faster charging.

@Zen
Got it. I’ll give this a try next time I charge. Thanks .

I’ve noticed the same issue since it started getting colder. In the summer, I usually charge around 78kW, but now it’s more like 28kW or less. If I understand correctly, preconditioning only works if you use the car’s built-in navigation to set the charger as your destination—not through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Have you tried setting the built-in navigation to a fast charger? Did it make a difference?

It won’t help if your car doesn’t have a battery heater. Without it, preconditioning won’t work.

Have you checked the temperature of the battery?
